"I have been given many opportunities to succeed, and it is only fair that I also do what I can to provide opportunities for other students."
Raised in a family that placed a high value on education, Tara knew early in her academic life that she wanted to study engineering and prepare for a career in medicine. At the same time, she also wanted to pursue her study of the French horn because of her lifelong passion for music.
Tara currently attends the Johns Hopkins University and the Peabody Conservatory of Music, where she is spending a rigorous four years completing a five-year double degree program in biomedical engineering and musical performance. While she knows that she will have to specialize later in life, she has "embraced this opportunity to diversify myself in college."
In addition to her coursework, Tara participates in several research projects with a biomedical focus. She has also found time for a range of volunteer activities, including serving as an academic advisor and tutor and as a member of the Johns Hopkins University Band and Choral Society. As a volunteer for the Child-Life program at Johns Hopkins Hospital, she has enjoyed working with children to help improve their quality of life during their stay in the hospital. She has also made rounds with her father, an orthopedic surgeon whose work has been an inspiration to her throughout her life.
After completing medical school and surgical residency, Tara expects to become a surgeon in academic medicine. She believes her classwork, volunteer experiences, clinical exposure, and extracurricular activities have prepared her well for a such a career. She believes that she will enjoy teaching residents and medical school students and sharing her enthusiasm for her work with them.
Tara compares surgery to a symphony, "with many individuals working in a concerted fashion, each contributing something of importance throughout the procedure," and says that she would find it "highly rewarding to be a member of such a team."
