Biography

Katie Robinette initially expected to go to medical school. College course work and internships developed her interest in research. She became intrigued by topics in human sexuality and women's psychology, while travel to France and Southeast Asia introduced her to cultural differences. "I saw absolute poverty in rural rice paddies and extravagant wealth in royal palaces. I discussed religious sexism with a Buddhist monk and was woken up at dawn for the Muslim call to prayer. These experiences truly opened my eyes to what lies beyond our protected western walls and left me desperate to see more." Her career ambitions began to focus on working with international organizations that promote health, especially in areas with limited resources.

Katie made a strong impression academically during her exchange year in Bordeaux. There, she studied biological psychology and achieved the top ranking in classes numbering 400 to 900 students, despite the courses being conducted in French. She used the research conducted there in her senior honors thesis, and was invited to present her results at the National Conference on Undergraduate Research. The scientist coexists with the artist in Katie. She studied cello, played annually at a Colonial Christmas dance, and admires Yo Yo Ma. In addition, Katie has worked on campus sustainability ventures and volunteered in New Orleans, doing Katrina relief work in shelters.

With this scholarship, Katie can realize her career plans. These include a stint with the Peace Corps after she completes her graduate studies in global maternal, child, and reproductive health. She hopes to use her French language skills working in a Francophone country in sub-Saharan Africa or French Polynesia. She intends to move on to field research, and then to international health projects with the World Health Organization or the Red Cross.
