Ulugbek Baymuradov remembers when his father bought him an English grammar book for $11, which was his family's entire monthly income in Uzbekistan. "I understood how much my parents were sacrificing for me." Feeling renewed motivation, Ulugbek excelled in 8th grade and then qualified for a high school exchange program for which only 50 students were selected from the entire nation to study in the United States. "Living with an American family, I learned to bridge the gap of differences, and established strong bonds with them." Ulugbek thrived in the community and volunteered at least eight hours a month, in addition to playing in three high school sports.
With the help of his American host family and their community, he returned to the United States and enrolled in community college. Ulugbek worked as a math tutor and maintenance worker, bicycled to campus even in winter, and stepped into significant leadership roles in class and student organizations. Ulugbek shares a unique global perspective with fellow students. He earns high regard for his critical thinking and boundless capacity for inquiry and analysis. He questions respectfully, and assists others with readiness and kindness.
