Biography
PROFILE: After being named an Undergraduate Transfer Scholar, Ulugbek “Bek” Baymuradov gave an
interview posted on YouTube a few years ago. The young native of Uzbekistan talked with passion about the social and economic hardships in his central Asian homeland where half the population lives on less than US$1.25 per day. The hardships he faced growing up have given Bek a sense of purpose as he continues his education. Bek’s gentle demeanor and brilliance show as he discusses his eventual return to his birthplace to help improve Uzbekistan’s social and economic climate.
INSPIRATION: Many people have sacrificed so Bek could attain his goals: first, his parents back in Karshi, Uzbekistan, a large, southern city; next is his American host family in California with whom he lived as a high school and junior college exchange student. The educator who most influenced Bek is Dr. Janet Asay, a professor at Treasure Valley Community College. She devoted countless hours to making Bek feel at home on campus, and she continues to be a valuable mentor.
ASPIRATION: Bek’s goal since arriving in the United States, has been to return someday to his native Uzbekistan. He remains grateful for opportunities--both earned and given--but economic conditions are so pitiful in his homeland that he wants to use the entrepreneurial skills he’s learned to help provide a better life for his countrymen. His ultimate goal is to help solve challenges in development in other nations around the world.
MAKING A DIFFERENCE: Bek is most proud of his service as Division IV International Vice president of Phi Theta Kappa International Honor Society. “It was through my involvement with Phi Theta Kappa that I met, and was inspired by thousands of dedicated students aspiring to make this world a better place.”
ACCOLADES: Although he’s won many honors and awards over the years, he is most proud of being a two-time Jack Kent Cooke Scholar. In addition to his leadership role with Phi Theta Kappa, Bek also won the Ben and Laurine Wrenn Award, and the Lou Gasca Award, both presented by his community college.
INTERESTING FACT: All of Bek’s friends know he’s a good cook and they jump when he invites them to his apartment for a traditional Uzbek meal he makes from scratch. What they don’t know is that in his spare time, he’s become quite an expert in preparing Chinese specialties: including everything from “Peking Duck, to Wonton Soup, to Chicken Feet.”
