“One pivotal moment in my life stands out when I think of how my academic and career ambitions have changed over the years. When I slid my finger under the flap of the first big white envelope addressed to me from the Jack Kent Cooke Young Scholars Program and read the letter contained inside, all I needed to see was the first word, ‘Congratulations!’ From that moment on, I knew my life would never be the same.”

Biography

Highlights of Young Scholar Experience: A highly competitive youngster, Ann Hollingsworth had lofty dreams even in grade school of attending a “big name” university and having a successful professional career.  She found the Foundation’s Young Scholar program, which recognized her dreams and laid the foundation for her to achieve great things.  As a Young Scholar Ann was able to attend classes at a pair of local community colleges, participate in the Great Books program at Amherst College and attended other summer sessions at American University in Washington, DC, and the University of Notre Dame.

Profile: Wherever Ann Hollingsworth ends up going to college, one thing is for sure . . . the student population will be a lot larger than her current school, the Kim (CO) Undivided High School.  For grades 7 through 12, total school population topped out at 33 and like the theme song of the TV show “Cheers” from decades ago, “everybody knows your name.” That said, Ann is a stand-out at her high school and probably would be if there were one thousand more students in the school.  She registered a 3.98 GPA, just two percentage points shy of perfection. In the gym she was a standout on the Kim volleyball team. She also served as president of the Student Council, president of her local 4-H chapter, assistant editor of the yearbook and an officer with the local Future Farmers of America chapter.  Community and church service have always played a big part in Ann’s life, and will continue to do so.

Inspiration: Lisa Doherty was Ann’s English teacher since seventh grade.  “For the last six years she has taught me to write solid essays, analyse literature with an open mind, and truly appreciate the English language.”  But more than that, Mrs. Doherty went “above and beyond the call of a teacher to make sure that I succeed.”

Aspiration: Her future plans are still undecided, but it’s hard to see Ann with her love of open spaces and love of nature settling in a city.  But time will tell.

Making a Difference: In addition to talking about her intelligence and desire to succeed, all of Ann’s teachers mention Ann’s kindness and generous nature.  When she was asked to share an achievement she was most proud of Ann, as you would imagine, had trouble blowing her own horn.  But she did say that “although I don't have one specific achievement I can boast as my greatest, I am very proud of simply the kind of person I have become and this, I believe, is my greatest achievement.”

Accolades:  Ann was named Outstanding Junior during 11th grade and with it won a scholarship to the University of Colorado.  She also received the American Chemical Society’s Top Student Award and finished in the top 5 of a national competition sponsored by the Society for Range Management.  Add in her being named to the National Honor Society and a 1st place finish in a Future Farmers of America Oratorical Contest and you’ll find a number of ribbons, trophies and certificates on the mantel at the Hollingsworth home in Kim.

Interesting Fact: While recreational shooting is usually considered a man’s sport, Ann has always enjoyed going out in the field with her dad’s shotgun and shooting trap.  In fact, Ann competed in 4-H shooting events in both county and state competitions.
