“One pivotal moment in my life stands out when I think of how my academic and career ambitions have changed over the years. When I slid my finger under the flap of the first big white envelope addressed to me from the Jack Kent Cooke Young Scholars Program and read the letter contained inside, all I needed to see was the first word, ‘Congratulations!’ From that moment on, I knew my life would never be the same.”
Highlights of Young Scholar Experience: A highly competitive youngster, Ann Hollingsworth had lofty dreams even in grade school of attending a “big name” university and having a successful professional career. She found the Foundation’s Young Scholar program, which recognized her dreams and laid the foundation for her to achieve great things. As a Young Scholar Ann was able to attend classes at a pair of local community colleges, participate in the Great Books program at

Inspiration: Lisa Doherty was Ann’s English teacher since seventh grade. “For the last six years she has taught me to write solid essays, analyse literature with an open mind, and truly appreciate the English language.” But more than that, Mrs. Doherty went “above and beyond the call of a teacher to make sure that I succeed.”
Aspiration: Her future plans are still undecided, but it’s hard to see Ann with her love of open spaces and love of nature settling in a city. But time will tell.
Making a Difference: In addition to talking about her intelligence and desire to succeed, all of Ann’s teachers mention Ann’s kindness and generous nature. When she was asked to share an achievement she was most proud of Ann, as you would imagine, had trouble blowing her own horn. But she did say that “although I don't have one specific achievement I can boast as my greatest, I am very proud of simply the kind of person I have become and this, I believe, is my greatest achievement.”

Interesting Fact: While recreational shooting is usually considered a man’s sport, Ann has always enjoyed going out in the field with her dad’s shotgun and shooting trap. In fact, Ann competed in 4-H shooting events in both county and state competitions.
