Biography

Highlights of Young Scholar Experience: When Bianca Lin reflects on her time as a Young Scholar, two Civic Leadership sessions come immediately to mind.  In the summer of 2010 she attended a residential program in Chicago, where she took a course in civic engagement and contemporary social issues. “I had grown up thinking I wanted to be a pediatrician, but after CivicWeek in New York and then the Civic Leadership Institute, I left Chicago knowing that I wanted to dedicate my life to the non-profit sector.”

Profile: When she was a third grader, her father, grandmother and a close aunt passed away all within a few months of each other.  As traumatic as that was for an eight-year-old, it was worse for her mom who was forced to take a second job to support both Bianca and her sister.  It was at that very tender age Bianca decided to start taking on more responsibility as well as more initiative as a student. “I pushed myself to succeed in school and seized every opportunity that came my way,” said Bianca.  She applied for the Young Scholars Program as well as another scholarship, and then boarding school on the East Coast. At Phillips Exeter Academy in New Hampshire she continued to push herself to try new things – she was a mainstay on the crew team and joined the yearbook staff, while juggling orchestra and private lessons for two instruments.  When she had spare time she participated in community service projects.

Inspiration: In addition to her mother and older sister, Bianca is also inspired by her piano and harpsichord instructor for the past four years, Mr. Sakata.

Aspiration: The non-profit world awaits Bianca.  I hope to spread awareness of social issues, promoting action that will lead to equality and justice.”

Making a Difference:  As a coxswain on the Exeter women’s crew team, Bianca steered her 60-foot boat with eight rowers to win the New England Championship in 2010.  “The crew team is important to me because it is one of my families - we support each other no matter what happens.”

Accolades: She is a Caroline D. Bradley Scholar, was named a National Merit Scholarship Commended Student, has won various other academic awards.

Interesting Fact:  Bianca’s older sister was also a Young Scholar.
