Biography

Highlights of Young Scholar Experience: Dijon Olave said becoming a Young Scholar was the “best thing that could have happened to me.” The experience allowed the Manhattan resident to attend a top preparatory high school and opened up opportunities to attend several summer programs including trips to Australia as part of a “Two Worlds United” program and involvement with a “Youth About Business” camp.

Profile:
 Being a teenage male in New York City is an adventure. Everything seems to move faster there than any other city in America
. “Believe me,” Dijon said, “it is very easy to fall victim to the negative influences growing up in an inner city.” That is one reason why he is grateful to the Foundation for the opportunities it provided him. “It was probably the one thing that not only changed my life, but actually saved my life.”   A graduate of Don Bosco Prep High School in New Jersey, Dijon did not have an easy path to where he is now. Hard work, dedication and sacrifice helped him persevere in high school.

Inspiration:  Dijon’s mother has been his guiding star. In addition he was inspired by the Foundation for believing in him and for its support.  He also took an interest in the life of Dr. Ben Carson, the famed neurosurgeon who, like Dijon, experienced difficulties in his early school years, but through hard work rose eventually persevered. 

Aspiration: A career in international relations, helping to solve the problems and differences between the people of the world.

Making a Difference:  He was a volunteer with the Promesa Food Pantry Program, which distributed meals to residents in East Harlem near Dijon’s home. In addition he was a volunteer at Habitat for Humanity in New York City, spending summer weekends constructing single family homes. 

Accolades:
 Not just a winner in the classroom, Dijon was also a member of the Don Bosco “Ironmen” State Championship football team.

Interesting fact:  Dijon was a member of a team that participated in the National Chess Championships in Portland, OR, finishing second in the competition. Dijon also loves all sports and is a huge New York Giants fan.
