“I owe much of my achievement to the way I was raised. In my household there was a very strong emphasis placed on education because failure was not an option. Even though I struggled in school, it was expected that I give 100 percent effort into my studies. My work ethic is based on dedication and the desire to win and never quit.”
Highlights of Young Scholar Experience: Dijon Olave said becoming a Young Scholar was the “best thing that could have happened to me.” The experience allowed the Manhattan resident to attend a top preparatory high school and opened up opportunities to attend several summer programs including trips to Australia as part of a “Two Worlds United” program and involvement with a “Youth About Business” camp.
Profile: Being a teenage male in New York City is an adventure. Everything seems to move faster there than any other city in America. “Believe me,” Dijon said, “it is very easy to fall victim to the negative influences growing up in an inner city.” That is one reason why he is grateful to the Foundation for the opportunities it provided him. “It was probably the one thing that not only changed my life, but actually saved my life.” A graduate of Don Bosco Prep High School in New Jersey, Dijon did not have an easy path to where he is now. Hard work, dedication and sacrifice helped him persevere in high school.
