Biography

Highlights of Young Scholar Experience: Ethan was able to attend McCallie School in Chattanooga, one of the nation’s top college preparatory schools.  The Foundation provided Ethan the means to participate in the Oxbridge Oxford Tradition in the United Kingdom in 2007 and to also study at the Duke University’s Talent Identification Program. He also attended a summer session at Georgetown University.

Profile:  Ethan was a perfect match for McCallie School, the boarding institution that became his home-away-from-home and where he thrived for four years. Early on in his high school career, Ethan began exploring various areas of community service, both on and off the campus, that helped to develop his character. In particular, Ethan said to building homes in Guatemala with Habitat for Humanity, “working side by side with people of different cultures in a pristine natural environment was an immeasurably valuable experience.” When asked to share a thought that would describe his way of looking at the world, Ethan chose a quotation from W. Edwards Deming, the famed American scholar and statistician: “Learning is not compulsory. Neither is survival.”

Inspiration:  A student of American History, Ethan talks with admiration about President Lyndon Johnson’s “Great Society” and the positives of his administration.

Aspiration:  Ethan plans to pursue a career in politics or teaching.

Making a Difference:  His final semester in high school, he was chosen as a Teaching Assistant in an AP US History class, working with underclassmen and foreign exchange students, helping them complex and coherent essays. He was also a volunteer with Habitat for Humanity.

Accolades:  Ethan was awarded the McCallie Honors Scholar Merit Award for the four years he boarded at the Tennessee prep school. He was also awarded the Alice Tweed Tuohy Junior Statesman of America Scholarship to study at Vassar College. During his sophomore year, he received a Keo Kio Grant which allowed Ethan to work in Guatemala with Habitat for Humanity. Ethan also received scholarships which allowed him to study US History at the College of William and Mary as well as Japanese language and culture at the University of Nevada, Reno and Concordia College.

Interesting fact:  Ethan was a member of the crew team his junior year of high school.
