Ezekiel Adigun

“I owe a lot of my high school success to intrinsic motivation. I worked hard because I wanted to prove to myself that I could do whatever I put my mind to. As I matured and gained more self-confidence, I was able to set goals for myself that I knew I could reach based on my previous performance. I also refused to stop doing things that I liked to do just because they were time-consuming . . . I had to work even harder to keep my grades up and participate in all of the extra-curricular activities that I cared about.”

Biography

Highlights of Young Scholar Experience: “The program has opened so many doors for me,” is how Ezekiel describes his Young Scholar experience.. And those doors remain open. Through the Young Scholars Program, Ezekiel began piano lessons and “showed me that music is a part of my life that I would like to hold on to.” There were several summer programs too including travel to Mexico and courses at a local university as well as total cultural and lingual immersion. Ezekiel also spent a summer at Washington University in St. Louis studying Micro and Macroeconomics.

Profile: Ezekiel Adigun’s school day begins earlier than most in Washington, DC. To arrive by first bell at the prestigious Georgetown Day School in the city’s affluent Tenleytown section, the Harvard-bound student must make bus transfers and then hit the DC Metro System’s Red Line at just the right time. But once he’s settled into homeroom he’ll tell you it’s more than worth the effort. Georgetown Day, the alma mater of thousands of successful men and women, fully embraced Ezekiel and vice versa. Whether it was organizing an on-campus fitness club, practicing with the track team, or just immersing himself in what he calls an “onerous” school workload, Ezekiel has faced each day with a smile on his face and a joyful outlook that’s contagious for fellow students and faculty members alike. What’s the secret to his success? “I love meeting new people. Once I meet a new person, I take a genuine interest . . . I realize that a path to happiness is made through connections with others.”

Inspiration: In addition to his parents and two older brothers, Ezekiel points to his sophomore European History teacher at Georgetown Day whose class assignments were used “as a base for students to make connections and logical assumptions about historical events. If you had a question about the reading, he would not answer it. He would instead find some way to make you answer it. That class forced me to modify my study habits and be more efficient.”

Aspiration: His career goals are still coming into view and will no doubt become clearer as the semesters go by at Harvard. But one thing Ezekiel’s sure of . . . the piano bug has bitten him as he loves to practice and perform and his love of speaking Spanish will no doubt be part of his life.

Making a Difference: In 2009, Ezekiel was the leader of a service learning component of his AP Chemistry class. Working with fourth graders at an inner-city grammar school, Ezekiel used his warmth, patience and humor to help the youngsters learn about chemistry using interactive experiments. Also during summers from high school Ezekiel volunteered to feed the homeless at two DC soup kitchens, So Others May Eat and the DC Central Kitchen.

Accolades:  National Achievement Scholar in 2009 and was recognized the same year by the College Board as an AP Scholar with Honor.  He is also a 4-year Varsity Award winner for both indoor and outdoor track and field.

Interesting fact:  Ezekiel loves to sing.  He also hopes to study Japanese and spend some time traveling around the country.
