Biography

Highlights of Young Scholar Experience: The Young Scholars Program allowed Janelle Garcelon to attend an academically rigorous private academy in New England.  So for Janelle her whole high school experience is the top Young Scholar highlight.  Of course there were summer programs that she took advantage of, but being able to attend a top-flight private school ranks at the top of her list.

Profile: Janelle lived a pretty full life in high school – between academics at the exclusive Proctor Academy and the many extracurricular activities (mainly drama society), the New Hampshire native gave much of herself to community service.  At any time one could find Janelle involved with the campus environmental club, helping with a community recycling effort or volunteering at the on-site Daycare Facility.  And that was just within the Proctor community.  In the larger community she worked at a local elementary school tutoring youngsters after school.  Helping those less fortunate is her calling and she was in her element during the 2010 summer break.  It was anything but a break for Janelle, who volunteered at an organization in San Francisco that fed and clothed the homeless.  Janelle will be the first to tell you it was truly a labor of love.

Inspiration: Janelle’s mother “has been my biggest fan and encouraged me to take chances and do my best.”  Janelle added: “I would not have been able to do any of the things I’ve done if it were not for her love and support.”

Aspiration: Janelle’s future ambitions are still coming into focus but because of her heavy involvement in community service, some type of career in social work may await.  Janelle said it best: “I am still undecided about what I want to do with my life, but I do know that, no matter what career I end up with, I want to be in a position to help people and be able to make a difference.”

Making a Difference: Arriving in San Francisco in the summer of 2010 to intern with a non-profit called “A Good Idea”, Janelle was thrust into an important assignment the first day she was there. She was called upon to organize “A Call to Arms”, a city-wide plea for food, clothing, toiletries, financial donations and anything else to help the large homeless population in San Francisco.

Accolades: Janelle was honored with the Excellence in Drama Award at Proctor Academy.

Interesting Fact: During the fall term of her senior year, Janelle participated in the Ocean Classroom Foundation’s Ocean Classroom. She helped sail a traditional schooner from Gloucester, MA to San Juan, PR.
