“Being selected as a Jack Kent Cooke Scholar is hands-down the greatest thing that has ever happened to me.”
Highlights of Young Scholar Experience: The Young Scholars program allowed Jennifer Lyu to participate in several summer sessions that she enjoyed immensely but more importantly they helped her decide on a career path. As a research assistant/intern at a psychology lab at nearby University of Michigan she became fascinated with the field of psychology and hopes to major in that subject in college.
Profile: Everything seems to be clicking and falling into place for Ann Arbor resident Jennifer as she prepares to embark upon her college career. The lacrosse star, accomplished clarinetist, community volunteer and last, but not least, honor student, suffered through a brief, personal limbo of receiving less than stellar grades, something that never happened to her before. But that changed when she looked herself in the mirror and realized she wasn’t trying hard enough. That self-diagnosis worked wonders. “I now fight myself on a daily basis. When I am falling asleep at night while I’m studying, I splash my face with cold water and fight my sleep just a little longer. When my muscles are aching during lacrosse workouts, I push a little harder.” The young lady is practicing and studying to extend her limits. She looks forward to attending a Christian college this fall to develop a firm foundation for her values and lifestyle as she also pursues further education.
Inspiration: Her inspiration comes from within and not from a family member or a teacher. She is inspired never, ever, to settle for mediocrity. “When I succeed at the little things, I see myself succeeding in the bigger things in life.” One could say her inspiration is good, old-fashioned hard work.
Aspiration: Jennifer is currently looking at a college major in psychology.
Making a Difference: Through her church Jennifer traveled to a Native American reservation in Minnesota one summer and Paraguay another summer, where she was a key member of the team helping the individuals who lived there. She painted houses, helped run a Vacation Bible School, cooked meals, cleaned homes, and learned about other cultures. In addition, Jennifer tutors four children, all of whom have recently moved to America and need help with learning the English language and culture. She also volunteered as a pre-school teacher and babysitter at her church since middle school.
Accolades: Early in 2010 Jennifer won the Distributive Education Clubs of America’s state competition for Marketing Management. During her junior year of high school she was name an Intel Science Talent Search participant based on an experiment she performed under the tutelage of a graduate student at the University of Michigan. Jennifer is also a National Merit Finalist and was recognized by The Korean Daily newspaper of Chicago for her educational accomplishments.
Interesting fact: Jennifer plays clarinet in the Michigan all-state Youth Concert Band.
