“Throughout the past few years, I have learned more about myself and what kind of obstacles I can handle. With this knowledge, I am able to push myself to achieve in whatever I choose to do.”
Highlights of Young Scholar Experience: “When I was accepted to be a Jack Kent Cooke Young Scholar, I was overjoyed,” Jessica Munro said. “I couldn't, and still can't think of an achievement I would rather receive.” Jessica, an
Profile: Been there, done that. In Jessica’s case, the subject is physical therapy. Jessica, a terrific though often injured athlete, had to withstand physical therapy several times in her career to recover from injuries sustained on the volleyball and basketball court. “When I went through physical therapy myself, I knew that it was the right career choice for me.” Not only did she excel in athletics, Jessica was a terrific student and just an all-around wonderful young lady. Resilient was how one of her teachers described her as she had to overcome some family difficulties during her high school years, but always bounced back ...no matter what the obstacle. Though always busy with sports, school or other extracurricular activities, she still found time to give back to others.
Inspiration: Back in middle school Jessica had a wonderful teacher by the name of Mrs. Locke who “had unbelievable faith in me, and that gave me the confidence that I needed to have faith in myself, to be able to be the best ‘me’ I could be.”
Aspiration: Jessica’s goal (and it has been that way for many years) is to become a licensed physical therapist.
Making a Difference: Jessica’s church group makes a difference in the lives of countless people in and around Grant Park. This past Christmas Jessica and her sister weren’t out doing last minute shopping or trimming the tree. They were at a shelter helping serve a warm meal to the homeless patrons. In a separate volunteer effort, she also helped raise a substantial amount of money to build a well in
Accolades: It seems that almost everyone who knows Jessica has something good to say about her. That’s probably the best accolade anyone could receive, but as far as material awards there have been many too. She was recognized by the American Association of Teachers of German for her performance on the national exam and received various letters for her participation in sports.
Interesting Fact: Public speaking is not Jessica’s forte. Even though she is outgoing and loves to talk to people, she says it is “seemingly impossible for me to talk in front of people.”
