“I’ve always believed that learning as much as you can is the best way to make your life exciting, and so I’ve approached all my academic pursuits with enthusiasm, determined to get everything I can out of them.”
Highlights of Young Scholar Experience: Kathryn’s summer programs supported by the Foundation included a special two week study of the Great Books. Another summer she participated in a playwriting program under the auspices of the Center for Talented Youth at Johns Hopkins University.
Profile: Kathryn realized when she was in fifth grade that writing made her feel alive. She knew she had a knack for making words come to life on paper (or the computer screen). “It (writing) takes me out of my ordinary, mundane existence and puts me in a new world, giving me freedom to roam in the endless expanse of ideas.” She also loves the arts, especially theatre, and is not ashamed to say that she has always liked school. She was also blessed with a sense of humor and loves to make family and friends laugh.
Inspiration: Music and the arts are a big part of Kathryn’s life. Thanks to Deborah Cole, a music teacher at Burncoat High School, Kathryn was encouraged to join the various music ensembles at the school. She belonged to the jazz band and wind ensemble and was a fixture in the music room practicing the flute that she’s played for a decade.
Aspiration: Kathryn’s ultimate goal is to become a published writer. She also expressed an interest in working as a children’s librarian.
Making a Difference: Kathryn was involved in the Best Buddies program at her high school as well as the “Prayer and Repair” initiative at her church.
Accolades: No surprise that with her love of writing she received Oxbridge Program’s Outstanding Student Prize in English Literature, one of many honors bestowed upon Kathryn during her high school career.
Interesting fact: Kathryn was the “poet laureate” of the music department at Burncoat Coat High School. Her friends “appointed” her to the position after she wrote a poem about the music room that they all liked.
