“A disability will never define who I will become. It will only make the path more challenging.”
Highlights of Young Scholar Experience: Nichelle Green was able to travel to Yale University during the summer of 2009 and work with the famed author and actress, Esmeralda Santiago. “She was astounding,” said Nichelle of Ms. Santiago. In addition to the many other summer programs and workshops, Nichelle said the advice and counsel of her Foundation advisors was priceless. Thanks to her Young Scholar status, “I’ve been able to shake my narrow mindedness and look at the opportunities around me.”
Profile: Nichelle Green, a brilliant and kind young lady, lives in a town called Vine Grove, Kentucky. Some maps don’t even list Vine Grove, but there’s a short write-up about it on Wikipedia. What’s noticeably absent in that listing is the lack of famous natives of the community. In about 20 or 30 years Nichelle will change all that after she makes her mark in the world of political science, journalism or economics. But in the present time, know that the soon-to-be First Lady of Vine Grove carries a near perfect GPA at North Hardin High School where she is literally the heart and soul of that school’s community. Nichelle was born with a disability and wears a prosthetic leg. Her hands are also misshapen making it difficult for her to hold a pencil. But the University of San Diego -bound teenager is a warrior and laughs in the face of adversity. She is the Drum Major for the high school band and leads the ensemble onto the football field each Saturday in the fall. She’s also the President of the National Honor Society and if there is a service organization in Hardin County that needs assistance, be it Salvation Army or the Youth Leadership Association, Nichelle is there ready and willing to help . . . and if necessary, lead.
Inspiration: In a way, overcoming her disability has been an inspiration to Nichelle. “My disability has shaped me into who I am today, and because of it I’ve learned to stay focused and never lose sight of, or stop fighting for, my goals despite the odds.” But Nichelle also thanks her Creative Writing teacher, Michelle Kessler-Buehler, who “has grown from more than a mere high school teacher in my eyes; she has become a mother to me and my writing.”
Aspiration: A talented writer and communicator, Nichelle may become a journalist, but government service may be in her future too.
Making a Difference: In her community, Nichelle works with an organization called All Nations Worship Ministries that provides outreach to the elderly at nursing homes throughout Hardin County and also prepares gift baskets for the needy.
Accolades: As the president of the Kentucky Association of National Honor Societies, Nichelle was called upon to preside over the state convention and myriad other tasks. She also was elected Drum Major for the North Hardin High School Marching Band, signifying that she is considered, literally, “the leader of the band.”
Interesting fact: Nichelle collects fortune cookie fortunes and then gives them out as advice when her friends are in need of kind words.
