“I was brought up in a family that stressed academics. However, in addition to school, I became involved in many other extracurricular activities. Maintaining a rigorous work ethic along with the motivational drive to succeed was all I needed to attain those high levels of accomplishment. I also believe that inserting moments of fun and joy is instrumental to success.”

Biography

Highlights of Young Scholar Experience: During the summer of 2009, Stanley studied biology and biomedical research for four weeks at the University of Pennsylvania Biomedical Research Academy. The summer before he was in the United Kingdom at Cambridge University, where he took classes in both the medical sciences and English literature. He also took advantage of other programs at Loyola Marymount University in Los Angeles and at Johns Hopkins University. “As a Young Scholar, I have learned to adapt to new situations, widened my perspective on worldly ideas, and realized the value of learning for its own sake.”

Profile: Stanley is a kind-hearted, dedicated young man with a boatload of energy, intelligence and enthusiasm. He grew up in Los Angeles County a few miles from the ocean, but Stanley doesn’t ever seem to have enough time to hang out at the beach, or anywhere else for that matter. When not attending classes at Arcadia High School, he is involved in many extracurricular and community service activities. His main time commitment (besides studying and practicing the piano and cello) is his volunteer work at City of Hope, a cancer research facility near his home in Duarte, CA, where he has volunteered for over three years, working in patient relations or whatever assignments the staff give him. “I am proud to say that I have helped heal the spirits of countless patients, which has brought me a great deal of personal satisfaction. Yet I know that I can do so much more.”

Inspiration: His main inspiration comes from his parents and grandparents. “They have taught me to always try my hardest in everything I do, but more importantly, they have taught me to understand that failures do happen, and when they do, it is best to learn from your mistakes and move on with your life.”

Aspiration: Following his undergraduate days, Stanley hopes to attend medical school. His goal is to be a physician, perhaps an oncologist.

Making a Difference: In addition to the aforementioned volunteer work at City of Hope, Stanley is also President of “Melodies in Action”, a non-profit organization that gathers local students to share their musical talents at hospitals and retirement homes. Stanley captained the Arcadia High Quiz Bowl Team to 1st Place finishes in several tournaments (the team is also ranked in the top 20 nationally).

Accolades: Stanley was named to his high school’s Principal’s Recognition Honor Roll, is an “Esteemed Member” of the National Honor Society, earned National Merit Finalist recognition, and was honored as an AP Scholar with Distinction. If that’s not enough, he earned “Master Class” by the Music Teachers’ Association of California, given to the top 15 musicians in the state. He was also the principal cellist of high school orchestra.

Interesting fact: “I love flat soda.”
