“I wouldn’t be here today if it weren’t for my parents. Even before I started school they would tell me the importance of my education, and pushed me to learn as much as I could. They kept me motivated to do my homework. They always supported me in all of my ventures, from cheering for me at Academic Team meets to buying me a guitar so I could learn to play.”

Biography

Highlights of Young Scholar Experience: Tyler Crews is a young Virginian who took full advantage of the opportunities afforded participants in the Young Scholars Program. His summers were spent attending education and social programs at various universities in the Northeast and Midwest. Tyler, who aspires to become a doctor, was most impressed with a leadership and medicine conference at Chicago’s DePaul University. “I learned how to become a better leader and how leadership is necessary in the medical field.”

Profile: Somewhere buried in an old shoebox or in the bottom of a desk drawer are two dog-eared identification cards that had much to do with Tyler’s future goals. The cards issued by the Red Cross testified to the fact that Tyler, only a boy at the time, was fully qualified to perform CPR and provide first aid if he came upon someone in dire need. “When I finally got my First Aid and CPR certification cards, I was ecstatic,” recalls Tyler. “It is amazing to know you have the ability to actually make a difference in an emergency.” Upon receiving those cards he knew almost immediately that he wanted to be a doctor, a trauma surgeon to be exact. He began preparing that day to help make a difference, to be prepared and on guard to help whenever and wherever anyone was in need.

Inspiration: Tyler says he’s a “three-time winner” because he’s been fortunate to have Rappahannock High School faculty member Melissa Delcour three years for English. Although science is his strength, Ms. Delcour “has been one of the greatest influences on my education . . . but more importantly taught me how to enjoy reading again.”

Aspiration: After receiving his undergraduate degree, Tyler wants to attend medical school and hopes to be a trauma surgeon or emergency room physician.

Making a Difference: Tyler volunteers at Manna Ministry, an organization near his home which prepares and serves meals for the homeless in Culpeper, VA.

Accolades: So many awards and so little space to jot them down. But at the top of the list is recognition from the College Board that Tyler was named an AP Scholar with Honor. In addition, his high school’s Quiz Team earned Third Place in the national Academic Quiz Tournament. Tyler was also awarded the Cambridge Scholar Award, received the Gold Medal in the Geospatial Technology State Challenge and is a three-year member of the National Honor Society.

Interesting fact: It’s nearly impossible for Tyler to walk past a blood drive and not join the effort. In the past two years he has donated over a half gallon of blood.
