Biography

Highlights of Young Scholar Experience: Being a Young Scholar afforded Zanyl Farrell the opportunity to attend prep school and to partake in many summer program offerings including three separate sessions “which allowed me to expand my knowledge of the medical field.” But mostly she says being a Young Scholar allowed her to meet “so many wonderful people.”

Profile: A few years ago Robert De Niro starred in a movie titled “A Bronx Tale” which chronicled the efforts of a youngster growing up in that New York borough. There’s another “Bronx Tale” taking place but this one isn’t a fictional movie script but rather a true life success story and it stars Zanyl Farrell. The young lady is a native of Montserrat in the Caribbean’s Lesser Antilles. Zanyl was only five when she and her mom left that resort setting for a new home just a stone’s throw from the fabled Yankee Stadium. Although Montserrat is a scenic spot, Zanyl said there were few opportunities there. She’s made the most of the move and has succeeded in most every challenge she’s faced. A graduate of the prestigious Loomis Chaffee School in Connecticut, Zanyl is an honor student, active in more extracurricular activities than space allows us to list, and is a Resident Assistant in her dormitory. As one faculty members said of Zanyl, “she is a beloved and respected member of our community.”

Inspiration: Her desire to succeed comes in part from Zanyl’s fifth grade teacher in New York City. “Mrs. Thompson made it her duty to make her students and their parents aware of the opportunities that are available. She wanted her students to aim for higher goals and not settle for less,” Zanyl said.

Aspiration: Her goal is to become a nurse.

Making a Difference: As the head Resident Assistant in her dormitory, Zanyl serves as a big sister to her fellow students. She is there whenever someone needs help or a kind word. In addition, over the years Zanyl has volunteered her time and talents as a tutor and teacher assistant to kindergarten children as well as a nurse’s assistant in a local hospital.

Accolades: Zanyl received honors recognition during her junior year at Loomis Chaffee.

Interesting fact: “I’m a bit addicted to ‘Guitar Hero’”, Zanyl says of the latest music video game.
