“I consider myself a fairly motivated and independent learner. As a home-schooled child, I was allowed to figure things out for myself, rather than having them drilled into my mind by a teacher. Having this ability encouraged my interest and subsequent success in academics.”
Highlights of Young Scholar Experience: As a Young Scholar, Joe attended a six-week session at Carnegie-Mellon University, taking undergraduate courses in philosophy, electrical and computer engineering. He also enrolled in summer classes in cryptography and engineering at Yale University.
Profile: Some people have a natural ability when it comes to computers. Joe Frazier is one them. The light switch, or in Joe’s case, the computer terminal, was turned on permanently when he took a course in Java programming language. It was at some point during that class that he learned of the world of computer science and decided to be a major player in it. He’s taken that next big step, and is enrolled at Carnegie Mellon University in Pittsburgh, one of the top schools in the world in that subject area. Although home-schooled until he was 15, Joe attended high school at the North Carolina School of Science & Math in Durham.
Inspiration: Joe was home-schooled by his mother from the first grade through tenth grade and she “has had a great impact on my life.”
Aspiration: He would like a career in computer science.
Making a Difference: Joe volunteered as a web designer at the library in his hometown.
Accolades: He was recognized as a National Merit Scholarship Finalist.
Interesting fact: Joe’s very good at Dance Dance Revolution (a rhythm-based dance video game).
