AsJa D. Sutton

Biography

AsJa Sutton sees challenges and takes action. "I have been a mother of three since I was in the fourth grade. Let me explain myself; my father left when I was young, and when he did, my mother had to work a lot to support us." AsJa fended for herself and her three younger siblings, cooking dinners and breakfasts, supervising homework, and getting everyone to school.

"Not many people in my family have continued their education past even middle school. I believe that education is the most important thing in life." To finance community college and support herself, AsJa simultaneously worked three jobs: as a teaching assistant in a kindergarten, at another school's after-school program, and at the community college public relations department. She also participates in tutoring through community service programs. "This may seem like a lot, considering I also attend school full-time and maintain a 4.0 GPA, but I work well under pressure. I learned early in life to balance jobs and school because I have always had to help financially support my three younger siblings. I am very proud of all that I have done for them, though." AsJa also held the office of president of the three most active organizations on her campus, Phi Theta Kappa, student government, and campus activities board.

Her recommendations speak of AsJa's courage and continued desire to expand her intellectual horizons. Her love of learning seems indomitable. "I want to teach kindergarten, because I feel that a child's first teacher is one of the most important and is the one who will set their attitude for their entire school career."
