PROFILE: Claudia Moreno continued her academic studies at The University of Chicago as a returning student, having left her undergraduate studies over ten years prior. Now, she has decided to pursue her lifelong ambition of becoming a professor of literature.
A Jack Kent Cooke Scholar since 2003, Claudia is also interested in research, particularly topics that pertain to comparative US and Latin American literature. “It is with great enthusiasm that I am ready to embark on a graduate degree and carry out my raison d’être.”
INSPIRATION: “I am perpetually grateful for the opportunity the Jack Kent Cooke scholarship has granted to not only improve my economic situation, but also to be an example to my children, and to have studied under some of the most amazing minds of our time.”
ASPIRATION: Claudia is pursuing her master’s degree with a specialization in American literature. Her ultimate aspirations are to obtain a doctoral degree and teach English literature in higher education.
MAKING A DIFFERENCE: As an English as a Second Language Instructor, Claudia assists non-native, non-English speakers to refine their grammar, writing, listening, and speaking skills at various levels of English proficiency in order to prepare them for higher education, vocational training, and a career.
ACCOLADES: Claudia is a recipient of the Bilingual Educators of Chicago Essay scholarship. A member of the All-Illinois Academic Team, Claudia also received the President’s Award for High Scholarship upon graduation from Wilbur Wright College.
INTERESTING FACT: Claudia took her first long-distance ride on her own motorcycle to the Jack Kent Cooke Scholars Weekend in Washington, DC.
