Biography

PROFILE: Donald Washington is an advocate for world peace and nonviolence. As an undergraduate, he participated in an intensive study abroad program in Israel, Africa, and Egypt. While in Israel, he had the unique experience of studying firsthand at the Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. /SCLC Ben Ammian Institute for a New Humanity in Dimona. He became a certified trainer in Kingian Nonviolence.
In his numerous studies on Dr. King, Donald came across a prescient quote from one of Dr. King’s last speeches about the idea that mankind’s survival hinged upon the immediate acceptance of nonviolence or nonexistence. It helped Donald to see his path in life a little more clearly. “I believe that I can develop into the type of unbiased and impartial leader and mediator that so many war-ravaged regions need. In doing so, I can help eliminate the emerging global possibility of ‘nonexistence.’”
INSPIRATION: Visiting former slave dungeons in Ghana helped Donald “grow into a complete person.” Having grown up in homeless shelters, he could relate to certain hardships and decided to dedicate his life to impacting people in a positive way.
ASPIRATION: Donald hopes to pursue a law degree and an M.P.P. at Harvard University to explore how to use international law and nonviolence as tools to achieve world peace in war-torn and violence-ravaged regions of the US and abroad.
MAKING A DIFFERENCE: Donald is a co-founder of the Nonviolence Youth Leadership Alliance (NYLA), a youth-lead conglomeration of organizations dedicated to advancing nonviolence and peacemaking internationally. He also helped create and implement a nonviolence training after-school program for students at Carver High School in Atlanta.
ACCOLADES: A summa cum laude graduate of Morehouse College, Donald was also a member of Phi Beta Kappa and recipient of the Compton Fellowship. Donald has been a Jack Kent Cooke Scholar since 2003.
INTERESTING FACT: Donald once interned at the Wall Street Journal as a fact-checker and journalist.
