HIGHLIGHTS OF YOUNG SCHOLAR EXPERIENCE: David has fully explored his fascination with government and politics as a Young Scholar. He studied US Constitutional Law at Siena College and participated in Lead-America’s Congressional Forum at Gallaudet University and Washington Summer Scholars program at American University. Through the Foundation’s Advanced Mentorship Program, David researched the constitutionality of presidential signing statements.
PROFILE: With support from the Jack Kent Cooke Foundation, David has worked hard to cope with his Asperger’s syndrome, a high-functioning variant of autism, overcoming difficulties with non-verbal communication, socializing, and perfectionism. He interned on Capitol Hill last summer with Congressman James Langevin (D-RI) and Senator Sheldon Whitehouse (D-RI), reading and answering constituent mail, taking phone calls from voters, and attending hearings. After years of studying the political process from afar, “I felt like I was playing a role in the running of our government.” David sings in his school Young Men’s Choir and is House Liberal Leader in the Rhode Island Model Legislature and editor of his school newspaper.
INSPIRATION: A chance meeting on a plane with Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi confirmed his desire to work in government and politics “to preserve, protect, and defend America for all time.”
ASPIRATION: David’s passion for government and politics has led him to summer programs, student government elections, and a great deal of reading, writing, and research. After his congressional internship, “I knew that I had found my niche in the world.”
MAKING A DIFFERENCE: David has umpired for the Cranston Western Little League every year since 2002.
ACCOLADES: An AP Scholar, David served two years as Class President and received a Brown University Book Award for writing. He is a member of the National Honors Society and Spanish Honors Society.
INTERESTING FACT: David met Madame Speaker Nancy Pelosi on a flight home from his Congressional internship. She produced a $1 bill, pointed out the Latin phrase Novus Ordo Seclorum – “a new order for the ages” – and explained how just as the founding fathers had established a new order, every generation of Americans is charged with preserving and strengthening that order for all time.
