“Ever since entering high school I have become a different person. I started to see a wider spectrum of interests and activities, all of which were intriguing. I became fascinated with athletics and volunteering became a whole new passion of mine.”
HIGHLIGHTS OF YOUNG SCHOLAR EXPERIENCE: Richard has participated in a wide range of summer programs. He studied web design at Internal Drive’s (iDTech Camp) and took journalism and Model United Nations courses at Yale University’s Exploration Camp. He also participated in the Foundation’s CivicWeek Program in Washington, DC, where he studied environment and public health issues.
PROFILE: Richard’s love for science and math led him to the Thomas Jefferson High School for Science and Technology. Once in high school, Richard became interested in a wide range of activities from football and lacrosse to cooking and playing the piano. With the help of the Foundation, he was able to pursue many of these interests. In his junior year, Richard’s mother left for her native Korea to undergo surgery and he became the ‘replacement’ parent, caring for his younger brother. The experience prepared him for the future where “life is far beyond what assignments are due in the upcoming week.” He has now decided to pursue a career in the medical field.
INSPIRATION: “My parents and my aunt and uncle have shown me that anything is possible with the proper work ethic.”
ASPIRATION: Richard plans to pursue a career as a doctor.
MAKING A DIFFERENCE: Richard is a volunteer tutor at Bren Mar Park Elementary School. He helps the mentally challenged with athletic programs at the Northern Virginia Training Center and participates in clothing and canned food drives through the Spanish Honor Society.
ACCOLADES: Richard is an AP Scholar with Distinction and a National Merit Scholarship Commended Student.
INTERESTING FACT: Richard speaks Korean and Spanish and loves playing ping-pong.
