“Success is achievable if you have the right people in your corner.”
HIGHLIGHTS OF YOUNG SCHOLAR EXPERIENCE: Jasmine participated in many summer programs, including Duke University’s Creative Writer’s Workshop and the National Student Leadership Conference at University of California, Berkeley. She also took several writing courses, participated in a Spanish language immersion program, and took part in Lead America. “I take things I have learned from the leadership conferences and apply them to my life.”
PROFILE: Growing up in one of Washington, DC’s roughest neighborhoods surrounded by “people who believe there’s no hope to ‘make it out,’” Jasmine learned at a young age that education was her stepping stone to success. She graduated valedictorian of her middle school class and has pursued a progressively rigorous curriculum at Georgetown Day School where she has also taken on leadership positions. In her sophomore year Jasmine suffered a setback when a close friend was shot and killed. “The JKCF staff understood my situation and was willing to provide me with the support I needed to get back on my feet.” She has successfully finished high school and is looking forward to studying to become a pharmacist. “The Foundation has made me realize that there are tremendous opportunities within my reach.”
INSPIRATION: Jasmine’s grandmother and mother have inspired her to use her negative surroundings as a drive to succeed.
ASPIRATION: Jasmine plans to become a pharmacist.
MAKING A DIFFERENCE: Jasmine is a member of the Young Women of Color affinity group and the Black Culture Club, where she served as co-head in 2007. She tutors DC elementary school students in reading and has volunteered with the American Red Cross.
INTERESTING FACT: During a leadership/medicine and healthcare conference in Boston, Jasmine visited medical schools in the area and was given the opportunity to dissect a pig’s heart.
