“The Jack Kent Cooke Foundation has taken the place of the rich uncle missing from my life. My parents have raised me without support, financial or otherwise, of any relatives, making it especially difficult for them to find the money to pay for the programs that help to further my academic and extracurricular interests. Like a relative, the Foundation has given me guidance as well as financial support.”

Biography

HIGHLIGHTS OF YOUNG SCHOLAR EXPERIENCE: The Jack Kent Cooke Foundation has helped Alex to fully explore his musical interests, covering weekly guitar lessons and costly band dues and trips. He participated in the Centrum Jazz Workshop’s jazz camp for two consecutive years. Alex has also pursued such nonmusical interests as web design, computer programming, mathematics, and swimming.
PROFILE: At the age of 12, Alex discovered the guitar. He spent a few months practicing on his cousin’s beat up guitar before his parents were able to save money for him to take lessons. Despite his blistered fingertips and lack of music theory knowledge, his determination increased with each lesson. Alex also enjoys songwriting, drawing, and web design. “My life so far has been all about exploration, and I know that it will eventually lead me to my true path, even if it is a blend of many interests.”
INSPIRATION: Alex’s guitar teacher helped instill a sense of discipline that has guided his progress throughout high school.
ASPIRATION: Alex has an interest in architecture which he hopes to further explore.
MAKING A DIFFERENCE: Alex has played volunteer gigs to raise money for various causes and has tutored students in mathematics.
ACCOLADES: Alex was named an AP Scholar with Distinction and selected as a National Merit Scholarship Semifinalist by the College Board. He also received a Scholar Athlete Award for being the most academic member of his swim team.
INTERESTING FACT: At age seven, Alex was certain he would grow up to be a cartographer, obsessively collecting and copying maps of all kinds. He even met the chief cartographer of Seattle’s bus company and took home a giant computer-generated map of his neighborhood.
