“Self expression is a big part of my philosophy on life. The Young Scholars Program has allowed me to constantly find new ways to express myself, and has given me great opportunities to broaden my horizons.”
Marisela Trevino says it was not until her senior year that she realized she wanted to be an engineer. For most of her youth, she planned to become a veterinarian, then for a while, a pathologist. Engineering was a hobby, or so Marisela thought. One day, working after school on a competition robot for the Engineering Team, it hit her: “I love this.” Marisela is looking forward to studying engineering in college and eventually hopes to put her skills to work for NASA, furthering space exploration.
As a Young Scholar, Marisela has pursued her love for music, trying out the guitar and taking music theory and private lessons to strengthen her skills on the saxophone. She has also grown from trips to Washington, DC and other places as a Young Scholar. “The opportunity to travel has helped me see that there is a huge world beyond the borders I’m accustomed to here in Texas,” she says.
In addition to being co-president of the Engineering Team, Marisela has been leading her school’s Academic Decathlon Team to victory this year. Decathlon head coach and math teacher Amy Kosler says Marisela is, “inspirational, full of life, and destined for greatness.”
