"I want to promote socially and environmentally responsible development, and improve people's lives, with architecture as my tool."
Growing up in Romania, Delia Conache was a physics prodigy whose future as a rocket scientist seemed assured. In spite of her achievements, she had a growing sense that something was missing. Traveling abroad as a member of the Romanian National Olympiad Physics team, Delia saw a world not limited by a rigid system and made the decision to go to Middlebury College. "Suddenly I found myself in a completely different universe, where the difficulty was not finding opportunities, but rather choosing from the numerous ones available."
After exploring the arts - from piano to painting to art history - Delia is pursuing a master's in architecture because it weds her passions. "Architecture proved to be the only art form that managed to combine the creativity and sensitivity that the fine arts helped me develop with my innate need for science."
Delia sees her career as an architect as an opportunity for social activism. She wants to develop green buildings that respect the environment and find new ways to maximize the use of natural resources. She is very interested in public architecture as a means to improve the quality of life for communities and to explore solutions for homelessness.
