Nicklaus R. Laverty

Biography

Nicklaus Laverty is a superb scholar, who is interested in learning for learning's sake. "The vision of success that motivates me is going through the process of education itself, and using the fruits of that labor to try and make a positive difference in the world, however small." His subject is political science, which knits together his love for politics, writing and analysis, and, in particular, the study of states in transition.

Nicklaus is pursing graduate work in political science focusing on the experiences of the post-Soviet successor states. "Examining the processes these states have undergone, as well as the obstacles and difficulties that have arisen, gives us a better idea of how the process of democratization proceeds in the short term, in addition to providing long term case studies of which strategies are successful and which are not," he says.

After he completes his Ph.D., Nicklaus hopes to publish articles and books. He was editor of a new student publication on international issues and his writing has already earned him awards. Nicklaus is also interested in working with international organizations that research and monitor activities related to democratization.
