Biography
PROFILE: Here’s the abridged version of Rachel Brewer’s life in ten words: mother, humanitarian, nurse, world traveler, problem-solver, scholar, instant friend. The last descriptive phrase is probably the most important to Rachel because everywhere she’s been for any period of time, be it in her native Canada, South America, southeast Asia, the Middle East, California, or Maryland, her friendly smile, good nature and selfless dedication to others have left lifelong friends at each stop in her life. At Johns Hopkins, Rachel volunteered at a Baltimore high school where she taught students about adolescent depression. Her nursing instructors say her enthusiasm, love of life, her varied background, and ability to find joy in the simple things will make her a valuable member of the nursing profession.
INSPIRATION: In addition to her two sons, Rachel was motivated by numerous teachers, especially a nursing instructor at Johns Hopkins named Jo Walrath, who directly influenced her understanding of ethics and professionalism, “Dr. Walrath single-handedly brought the expectations I have of myself to a new level.”
ASPIRATION: Rachel wishes to work in the field of global public health both in the US and abroad.
MAKING A DIFFERENCE: Through a free John Hopkins public program, Rachel works as a doula, or birth companion assisting underserved mothers in the Baltimore region.
ACCOLADES: Rachel received the Chancellor’s Award at her graduation from San Diego City College and was chosen to speak at commencement. She was awarded both the Leora Dumlao Honors Scholarship for outstanding academic achievement and the Frank E. and Florence A. Curran Social and Political Science Scholarship.
INTERESTING FACT: Rachel is the first member of her family to graduate from college.
