Biography

PROFILE: At the age of 18, Tsvetelina Churalska left her native country of Bulgaria in search of a better life.
Before coming to the US, Tsvetelina was unsure of what she wanted to do with her future. She has since rediscovered an early passion. From a young age she had built shelters in her room, constructed castles from cards, and drawn games filled with tunnels and mazes for her classmates. Now, after visiting the college of architecture at Texas Tech University during a summer internship in the electrical engineering department, she has made the decision to become an architect.
INSPIRATION: Tsvetelina is inspired most by her mother and father. “From my mother I inherited her talents, kindness, and nobleness; from my father his ambition, stubbornness, and desire for success.”
ASPIRATION: Having inherited her mother’s talent for drawing, Tsvetelina plans to become an architect.
MAKING A DIFFERENCE: In Bulgaria, she was an active member of the Youth Red Cross and was chosen to work on the public relations team for a hotly contested mayoral race, speaking on national television on behalf of her candidate. In Texas, she has served as Secretary of the Midland College Student Government Association, Vice President of the International Student Club and was a member of Students in Philanthropy.
ACCOLADES: Tsvetelina won numerous awards in Bulgaria throughout middle school and high school—in math, chemistry, physics, and biology. She took first place in one national history competition and third place in another. Here in the US, she has been on the Dean’s List, received a merit award for participation in the American Mathematics Association, and been nominated as homecoming queen by the international student club and student government association. She is a member of Phi Theta Kappa and graduated with honors.
INTERESTING FACT: Tsvetelina danced for seven years with the Slaveiche Folk Songs and Dance Ensemble in Bulgaria. She also performed for two years at the Youth Hall Muppet Theater.
