“I decided after many years of contemplation that I am not too old for medical school.”
PROFILE: Candace Payne grew up in Miami after emigrating from Trinidad and Tobago at age eight with her mother and five siblings. She left a private university at age 19 after building up some college debt, believing it was not smart to finish her degree with a huge financial burden.
After many wonderful years of working as a nanny, she switched to a clerical position as a receptionist and realized that “success in that job was not enough for me.” Today she is excited about her future and is pursuing a long-held dream of studying medicine.
INSPIRATION: Candace’s aunt is a dermatologist, and when Candace was younger she would often ask her medical questions. Indeed, her aunt and uncle were “the two main persons in my life encouraging me to go after this degree.”
ASPIRATION: Candace plans to become a physician. “I chose medicine because I have a desire to help people in need.”
MAKING A DIFFERENCE: President of her Phi Theta Kappa chapter, Candace has been active in working with Volunteers for the Homebound, the Boca Helping Hands soup kitchen, and the World Vision AIDS Exhibition.
ACCOLADES: She is on the President’s List with a 4.0 GPA, and received the Presidential Distinction Award as outstanding chemistry student.
