“I am ultimately interested in helping organizations, such as universities and communities, establish effective programs to provide rich cultural exchanges through exploring the philosophical underpinnings of texts, performances and artifacts.”
PROFILE: Jarrod Brown is the first member of his extended family to attend college. As a young boy growing up on a tobacco farm in eastern Kentucky, he was always interested in philosophy. “At the age of 12, I was vegetarian, influenced by Jain sutras and Hindu thought.”
Shortly after graduating from college, Jarrod relocated to India, where he began a successful career as an educational consultant. He began working with American companies with operations in India, using his understanding of the belief systems and his own working class background to help both Americans and Indians prepare to work together with better understanding. His work quickly came to the attention of an Indian entrepreneur who hired him to spearhead an educational company. Jarrod recently founded his own firm to help provide cross-cultural training and exchange opportunities in the US and abroad.
INSPIRATION: Jarrod spent a summer studying Bunraku puppetry in rural Japan, which proved to be a deep cultural experience. “I wish to provide similar experiences and understanding to others so they may enrich their own cultures.”
ASPIRATION: Jarrod would love to become a university international center director. He is also interested in the further development of online educational resources in world philosophies.
MAKING A DIFFERENCE: As founding academic director of Tutor Vista Global in India, Jarrod used his position “to help reach out to provide free tutoring to the ten poorest rural school districts in the US.”
ACCOLADES: Jarrod was chosen as a Who’s Who Among College Students and is a member of the Mortar Board Honor Society. In addition, he received the Freeman Asia Award, which allowed him to study Islamic and traditional law in Malaysia.
INTERESTING FACT: Jarrod is an avid student of the shadow puppet theatre of Southeast Asia and made several trips abroad to study puppet performances.
