“I desire to bring better health to communities by initiating and implementing water and sanitation programs.”
PROFILE: As a child living in Japan and Palau for six years, Kristen Downs developed a sense of curiosity, adventure, and open-mindedness that she has carried with her. Her penchant for science began in 3rd grade with a science fair project and by high school blossomed into a national gold medal at the Science Olympiad.
Kristen spent her undergraduate years studying chemistry at the University of Florida, including a year abroad in France. She graduated in 2006 with a desire to break out of the lab and apply her skills. She joined the Peace Corps to teach mathematics and science in Kenya, where she became acutely aware of the dire need for clean water. “In the inadequacy of water and sanitation that plagues many parts of the world, I have discovered a field of great need where I can contribute engineering and scientific skills to improve lives.”
INSPIRATION: Kristen’s parents have dedicated their lives to serving others: her father as a physician and her mother as a minister. “Through their example I have learned the value and beauty of helping others.”
ASPIRATION: Kristen will pursue her graduate studies in public health and environment engineering with a focus on water, sanitation and international development. She hopes to work with such international organizations as World Vision and Oxfam, implementing water and sanitation programs and on global policy and planning with such organizations as WHO and UNESCO.
MAKING A DIFFERENCE: In addition to serving in the Peace Corps, Kristen has volunteered with Child Family Health International, taught English as a Second Language, and mentored college students with her church.
ACCOLADES: Kristen graduated Summa cum Laude and was a National Merit Scholar and member of both Phi Kappa Phi and Golden Key International.
INTERESTING FACT: Kristen loves intense high fives, giving piggy back rides, and palindromes.
