Biography

PROFILE: Jaclyn Tordo is passionate about helping those who find themselves in adverse situations. She has ensured that her work and volunteer experiences compliment her academic knowledge.
Her work with Family Abuse Services of Alamance County has allowed her to “develop deeper relationships with abused clients and become a known presence within the community as an advocate for victims of domestic violence.” She has taken on several other projects in an effort to positively influence the community, most notably developing the ATLUS (Adjusting to Living in the United States) Program that articulates the cultural and legal differences between living in the US and Mexico.
While domestic disparities have long been the focus of Jaclyn’s study and work, she gained new perspective when she visited South Africa. “As a participant in the competitive WorldTeach program, I will return to South Africa this summer to address one of the remaining disparities I witnessed: unequal access to education.”
INSPIRATION: Carolyn Stanworth has been Jaclyn’s biggest inspiration, providing her with shelter, support and endless encouragement.
ASPIRATION: Jaclyn plans to work in the juvenile justice system, advocating for youth and families. She plans to begin a nonprofit agency that will allow her to advocate for social justice issues related to her work on juvenile justice policy evaluation and reform.
MAKING A DIFFERENCE: Jaclyn is a shelter supervisor for Family Abuse Services of Alamance County, a nonprofit agency serving women and children who have experienced domestic violence. She volunteers with Tristan’s Quest, Inc., a nonprofit agency serving children with mental health disorders and with the Missouri Community Action Poverty Simulation, as well as with Mentors in Violence Prevention.
ACCOLADES: Jaclyn is a member of Phi Kappa Phi and was on the President’s List for four semesters and the Dean’s List for two. She was awarded the Al and Ruby West Human Services Scholarship and the John L. Georgeo Scholarship.
INTERESTING FACT: Jaclyn graduated summa cum laude from Elon University in only three years.
