Biography

PROFILE: In 2003, Lydia Chan moved 9,532 miles from her native Singapore to Scarsdale, NY to become an au pair. In 2009, Lydia moved again, but this time, only 20 miles south from her alma mater, Westchester Community College (WCC), to the northern tip of Manhattan to attend Columbia University. Lydia graduated from WCC with a degree in liberal arts/social science and received several academic honors along the way. Her goal is to become a Psychologist in the Education field.


INSPIRATION: Professor Elizabeth Gaffney at WCC is the person Lydia came to for encouragement and advice. “She was a teacher that you knew took a real interest in her students, in and outside of the classroom.”

ASPIRATION: Lydia wants to eventually receive an advanced degree in Developmental Psychology and plans to pursue a doctorate in that specialty in the future.
 
MAKING A DIFFERENCE: Lydia has taught piano to many young people throughout Westchester County. She’s most honored by her volunteer duties with “Carver Center” of Northern Westchester County where she worked with children of immigrant families incorporating song and dance in their learning activities. She also worked in soup kitchens in New York City and White Plains, NY, preparing food for the homeless.

ACCOLADES: Lydia was awarded a Kathryn Davis Global Community Scholarship and also received WCC President’s Honors. In addition, she received the Lim Ebon & Tan Le Eng Memorial Scholarship from WCC for excellence in Mathematics and the WCC Foundation Scholarship.
