Biography

PROFILE: Karima Ben Ayed, a native of Tunisia, spent several years working for various organizations in Germany before coming to the United States. At Northern Virginia Community College (NVCC), she exhibited her skills as both an honor student, and as a school employee developing and implementing leadership training materials for student leaders at all six campuses. By her 2009 graduation, Karima left a lasting impression on faculty, staff, and fellow students. One veteran professor considers Karima one of the most extraordinary students he has encountered at NVCC in over four decades. But as a girl growing up in Tunisia, life was challenging. In the North African country’s restrictive, male-dominated society, Karima felt powerless. “I had great difficulty fitting in and the oppressive limitations I endured caused me to feel rejected,” she said. As a result, Karima retreated into books, which served as an escape from her confining and complex surroundings.

INSPIRATION: Her main inspiration is to succeed in America, help others achieve their academic and career goals, and share her knowledge of other cultures and traditions with those with whom she works. She strongly believes in each individual’s right to self-fulfillment which motivates her to pursue a career in education and training. The American dream is alive and well in Karima’s heart: she lives it daily.

ASPIRATION: Karima’s goal is to earn a bachelor’s degree in education and organizational studies with an emphasis on training and learning processes. She would like to help others identify their unique talents and interests, improve their individual skills, and excel in pursuing their passion. In doing so, she also wants to promote intercultural communication and international exchange.

MAKING A DIFFERENCE:   As a teenager, Karima’s rebellious and inquisitive nature upset a person close to her. She was told: “once a diamond, now you are charcoal.” The words stung. But from that painful encounter, Karima moved on and up the chain of command at various businesses. She came to America and each day, she attempts to instill hope, understanding, and a sheer joy for life in others. She often tells friends: “Every individual is a diamond, not a piece of charcoal, which just needs to be polished with nurturing and education.”

ACCOLADES: She graduated Summa Cum Laude from NVCC and was nominated to the All-USA Academic Team. A member of Phi Theta Kappa, Karima is also listed in Who’s Who Among Students in American Junior Colleges.

INTERESTING FACT: Karima is fluent in five languages (French, German, English, Italian, and Arabic).
