Angela N Allison

“The experience of being devastatingly poor even though I work hard as a parent and at my job has ingnited within me a fierce determination to do whatever it takes to become self-sufficient. Pursuing a college education is one element on the path to becoming the sole provider for my children. Wanting better for them has been the biggest motivator behind the hard work that's led to my academic success -- essentially knowing the better I perform as a student, the greater the chances are that I'll be able to get us out of the projects and into a life where there is something more than nothing to show for genuine effort and hard work.”

Biography

Profile: Once you know a little bit about Angela Allison, you can’t help but end up rooting for her to succeed.  Count the Foundation in Angela’s corner and a bona fide member of her fan club.  A single mother since she was 17, for the past ten years she’s worked seven nights a week, 365 nights a year as a dedicated carrier for The Eagle newspaper in Bryan, Texas.  She does everything humanly possible and then some to keep her family in food and shelter. She stares poverty in the face each day, and she does it with a smile on her face knowing that the college degree she hopes to attain will help lift her and her children to the next economic level.  An honor student with a perfect 4.0 GPA at Blinn College, Angela’s bound to become an “Aggie,” the nickname of prestigious Texas A&M University down the road in College Station, where she will be attending in the fall of 2011 as a Political Science major.  Her ultimate goal is law school and a career as an attorney.  If anyone can do it, Angela can.

Inspiration:  Summer and Lansing.  Those are the names of Angela’s children and they are all the inspiration she needs to succeed in and out of the classroom.  She is proud that they, just like mom, are both honor roll students in grammar school. On the academic side, Angela is thankful she met Dr. Brad Hall at Blinn College.  His advice to Angela has been invaluable.  “He's also been sensitive to my challenges as a non-traditional student and always makes an effort to encourage me not only as a student, but as a parent and a worker, as well. He was the first I told in-person about my JKCF award.  I was afraid there wasn't going to be a spatula strong enough to peel him off the ceiling, he was so elated!”

Aspiration: Law school awaits Angela once she receives her undergraduate degree.  She’s likely to become an advocate for the poor and vulnerable populations of Texas.

Making a Difference: As only someone who’s “been there, done that” can experience, Angela is dedicated to preventative health care for women and gives her time whenever possible as a Planned Parenthood volunteer.  “A big reason that I'd gotten the chance to go to school and improve my future was due to my having access to preventative women's health care.”  Angela has worked with Planned Parenthood and organized a women's health event at her housing complex where residents were able to apply for free exams and contraception. “Facilitating this event that helped others solidified my desire to become an advocate for underprivileged mothers.”

Accolades:  For three consecutive semesters Angela was named a Blinn College President’s Scholar (equivalent to the Dean’s List).  She also was invited to join Alpha Phi Lambda, Blinn’s chapter of Phi Theta Kappa Honor Society.  In addition, Angela was awarded the Blinn College Foundation’s Academic Scholarship.

Interesting Fact:  Substitute Maria Von Trapp for Angela Allison.  “I live in a modern-day version of the Von Trapp Family household,” Angela said.  “My children and I all have an intense musical inclination.” Angela and her daughter, Summer, are passionate about singing and song writing and play the piano. And her youngest is “always tapping his toes or bobbing his head to any beat he hears, real or imaginary.”
