Biography

Profile: A warning to Robert B. Zoellick, the President of the World Bank: Curtwin Bismark wants your job!  Well, not now, but about 30 or 40 years in the future, Curtwin may have a shot at it.  The young man from Zimbabwe came to America in 2006 with determination, desire, grit ...and his parents’ life savings of $300 as he embarked on his dream of a better life for him and his family back in Africa.  He also soon realized that $300 doesn’t go far when trying to pay for tuition, buy books, supplies and “extras” ...like food and rent.  Although in a new land and facing obstacles that would have made a lesser man quit, Curtwin remained unbowed.  This was a man who experienced poverty in Africa that few in America ever see.  As a youngster he walked 8 km to and from school with holes in his shoes and many times without any food. Understanding the correlation between education and opportunities Curtwin came to America and enrolled in community college. “After many years, my academic potential was recognized and I was accepted into the most impressive academic program Houston Community College has to offer, the Honors College.”

Inspiration:  Dr. David Wilcox (Chair of the Honors College) and Dr. Cheryl Peters (the Executive Dean) of Houston Community College Central College both played tremendous roles in cultivating Curtwin’s leadership qualities.  “Together, they have opened up their hearts, devoted a colossal amount of time and resources in stirring me towards the direction of positive progress. No words can truly express how grateful I am, knowing that we have crossed paths. I wish to impact people, the way they have impacted me.”

Aspiration:  Curtwin wants to become an economist and eventually, someday, lead the World Bank.

Making a Difference: The young Zimbabwe native has commited his life to enriching others.  At age 15 back in his hometown in Africa, he was teaching a night class to illiterate men and women on how to read and write. His class was comprised of people double and even triple Curtwin’s age, consisting of maids and landscape technicians who had been deprived of an education during apartheid. “Without monetary compensation or adequate transportation, I committed to always starting on time and to teaching substance that would inspire and add value to each and every student who entered my class.”

Accolades:  Curtwin received the Newman Civic Fellows Award from Campus Compact, was named to the All Texas Academic Team and was an All USA Academic Team nominee.  In addition he was the lead delegate of Jordan at the Model Arab League.  Top that off with being named to the Houston Community College Honors College.

Interesting Fact:  Curtwin has white water rafted in between the gorges of the Zambezi river.
