Anna Jeschke

“Being an au pair was an especially eye-opening experience, as it gave me insights into ‘American Life’ as opposed to the limited insights one would glean from being a mere traveler in a foreign country. Although my main responsibilities were focused on working with children, having to adapt to a different culture without having any family support to shape and develop me, helped me become the organized and motivated person I am today.”

Biography

Profile: She came to America to work as an au pair for a family in New York State, but while handling those daily duties, German native Anna Jeschke decided she wanted something more.  It started by enrolling at nearby Westchester Community College, which opened the gates for Anna in her quest for knowledge.  The start she made at the Valhalla campus of WCC was an important first step.  Thanks to hard work, a love for learning and some scholarship dollars, Anna will be moving on to Columbia University in Manhattan to work toward a business degree and then, hopefully, a career in finance. Was there a pivotal moment in the two years Anna was at WCC that shaped her future? Yes indeed, and it was the Workplace Culture Coaching program that played a tremendous part in both her time at WCC and her career ambitions. “This program by the Women’s Forum selects a small number of outstanding female students and matches them with mentors in their field of study. Through this program I was able to participate in many workshops that taught lessons about various aspects of the corporate world.”

Inspiration:  Richard Hyland was the teacher who had the greatest influence on Anna at WCC. In her first semester Anna took Dr. Hyland’s Business Organization Management class, which introduced her to many aspects of business. “Not only was he a great teacher, he also supported his students and encouraged them to come to him with any questions or concerns. Professor Hyland always believed in me and gave me the feeling of being able to achieve any goal I would set myself.”

Aspiration:  Wall Street may be in Anna’s future...or some position in finance with a large multi-national firm.

Making a Difference: In addition to her formidable academic aptitude (she had a perfect 4.0 GPA), Anna also actively participated in a number of college extracurricular activities. She was involved in various honors societies on campus, taking on leadership roles with each organization.  Anna’s involvement goes beyond merely supporting clubs and societies. Her leadership qualities, along with her drive to create a better college community, led to significant changes in student life. In the Fall of 2010 she organized a large fundraising event for breast cancer awareness month.

Accolades:  Anna received the SUNY Chancellor's Award for Student Excellence; the Curriculum Award for International Business Majors; was a finalist at the Beacon Conference with the academic work: "Dubai: Sustainable Growth or Destined for a Downfall?" and she was published in the Verdani 2011, the scholarly journal of WCC.  She was also on the President's list in 2009, 2010, and 2011.

Interesting Fact:  She is a talented drawer. “Especially when I was younger I engaged in drawing, mainly anime (Japanese Comics) pictures and I still have a collection of my best drawings. Another fact that may surprise people is that I danced Hip hop and breakdanced for many years when I was younger and even performed on stage together with my dance-crew.”
