“Deriving from an immigrant family, I have witnessed the harsh reality of poverty and socioeconomic hardship in California. Political issues such as immigration, agriculture and education affect my daily life; therefore, as the future generation I hope to become the voice of the suppressed in our society.”

Biography
Profile: Alma Lemus, although born in Mexico, grew up in a town called, appropriately enough, Farmersville, California. The community is located near what is referred to as “America’s Salad Bowl” because of the agriculture in that region. Alma is no stranger to the fields, having spent several summers harvesting fruit and vegetables on the farms of the Tulare and Fresno regions, and she believes that this experience has given her insight into the economic and environmental issues affecting the San Joaquin Delta, as well as immigrant rights concerns. She had an exemplary academic record at the College of the Sequoias and is on her way to the University of Southern California, where she will major in political science. She already has some on-the-job experience in the political process, having served as an intern/aide to the chief legislative counselor to California Assemblyman Tony Mendoza, and she also organized a leadership conference in Sacramento for high school students to learn about immigration issues.
Inspiration: The two mentors who Alma said she will always remain grateful to are her Farmersville High School teachers Lisa Prehiem and Kimberly Nelson. “Since high school, they have encouraged me to reach my full potential and to never give up,” said Alma. Ms. Prehiem was Alma’s keyboarding instructor and Mrs. Nelson was her English teacher. “They are my role models, mentors who motivate me every day to continue fighting through life challenges.”
Aspiration: Alma will be enrolling at the University of Southern California and majoring in Political Science and Pre-Law. Those who know her and have seen her leadership abilities first hand feel she has a true calling for public service.
Making a Difference: The achievement that Alma is most proud of is being selected as a Chicano Latino Youth Leadership Project/Comcast Fellow for 2010. “It is one of my greatest accomplishments because it encouraged me to pursue law and to discover new internship opportunities,” said Alma.
Accolades: Alma was named the College of the Sequoias ASB Sophomore Scholar as well as a CLYLP Comcast Fellow. She also earned College of the Sequoias President’s List Academic Recognition.
Interesting Fact: When Alma was younger she designed her own bags, clothes, and jewelry.
