“I decided to transfer to a four-year university because I have a passion for learning and strive to achieve my personal goals. I want to make a difference in the world one day, whether it be globally or within my community. Improving the lives of others is something that means a lot to me and I hope to use my education to help make that happen. “
Profile: On May 16, 2011, the Board of Trustees of Northern Virginia Community College (NOVA) convened its end of school year meeting on the Manassas campus. First item on the agenda: “SPECIAL RECOGNITION – Mr. Kyle Stevenson – Jack Kent Cooke Scholar Award.” NOVA is in the Foundation’s backyard and it is indeed a very special occasion when a NOVA student earns one of the coveted scholarships. But then again, in the case of Kyle Stevenson, he’s a very special young man and a brilliant student. As he said following graduation, “the road to becoming a JKCF Scholar was not by any means easy, but it was very rewarding and I learned a lot about myself and what I am capable of accomplishing. I developed a new understanding of the value of an education and I have applied myself to academia like never before.” As is the case with all the JKCF Scholars, Kyle was a distinguished student earning a near perfect GPA and was also an active participant in several campus organizations including Phi Theta Kappa.
Inspiration: Kyle’s most influencial teacher was Cinder Cooper of NOVA’s English Department. “Her class and teaching style made writing enjoyable, and brought about a passion for writing in me that I never knew was there. I learned so much from Ms. Cooper and her class taught me an invaluable skill that has propelled me through all of my other college courses. She gave me the confidence in the classroom to excel to my fullest potential and I thank her for bringing that out in me.”
Aspiration: Kyle chose to study political science and conflict resolution because he aspires to work at the State Department. “My dream, as cliché as it may sound, is to make the world a better and safer place for the people who live here now and also future generations.” Kyle said he would love to be a part of the effort that brings peace and stability to areas of the world that have been torn by war or struggling from century old conflicts. “I want to have a career working alongside leaders from other nations on foreign policy and diplomatic issues, moving toward continued peace and understanding.”
Making a Difference: Kyle is most proud of earning recognition on the Presidential Scholars and Dean's List for every semester at Northern Virginia Community College. “I appreciate knowing that hard work does, in fact, pay dividends in the classroom, and earning a spot on these lists with my peers is validation of that.”
Accolades: Kyle gained membership in the Phi Theta Kappa Honor Society and earned recognition on the Presidential Scholars and Dean's List every semester he attended Northern Virginia Community College. He also was named a Lifetime Learning Institute of Northern Virginia's Academic Scholar.
Interesting Fact: Kyle said he is somewhat of a daredevil. “I absolutely love rollercoasters!” he said. “The bigger the better is how I see it whenever I've gone to an amusement park.” Skydiving is also in his future, he said.
