Biography

Profile: Some people find their passion early, some later in life. Warren is in the second category.  Her passion is helping the homeless, specifically homeless street youth, and this non-traditional student was in early 40s when her future calling came into focus at a community college in Arizona.  Married and the mother of two teenagers, Angela was a full-time housewife when, in 2005 her husband, the family’s only source of income, was severely injured in a traffic accident.  Having never worked other than volunteering at church and school, the decision was made to begin her studies at Glendale Community College (GCC).  She enrolled in a social work degree program at Glendale and had a bit of an epiphany.  Although she knew she had a calling for social work and counseling, it wasn’t until her formal education began that the realization came to her like a flash that that would be her life’s calling.

Inspiration:  Dr. Jennifer Lane, the Honors Program Coordinator at GCC, has been a big inlfuence in Angela’s life. “She has guided, encouraged, cheered, and supported me throughout my time at GCC,” said Angela.  “Her dedication to teaching and providing enriching experiences have been immeasurable.” In January 2011, Dr. Lane invited Angela to be a part of the GCC Presidential Search Committee. “This and other experiences have given me tremendous opportunities to learn outside of the classroom, fueled many of my passions as well as giving me new passions. Dr. Lane is someone I will never forget.”

Aspiration:  It is Angela’s goal to become a social worker and work to improve the lives of street children in Arizona.

Making a Difference: In addition to her dedication to various community service groups while a student at GCC, Angela said her time as a parent booster at her children’s high school was special for her.  As the president of the school’s marching band booster organization, Angela was responsible for several massive fund-raising events which brought in over $20,000 and provide a much richer band experience for the participants.

Accolades:  Angela received the Chancellors Scholarship in 2009-2010 and the Student Award for Outstanding Service to Honors and the Community in 2010-2011.

Interesting Fact:  Angela has been singing in front of people since she was four years old. “I love to sing, write songs, and was a part of the Phoenix Community College choir that performed at Carnegie Hall in 1990.”
