Biography

Profile: Maria “Mili” Chapado came to the US from Argentina when she was eight years old. Those first few years weren’t easy as she struggled with a new culture and a new language. A dozen years later in May of 2012 Mili graduated from Palm Beach State College with honors and presidential distinction. But that’s just part of Mili’s story—it doesn’t reflect her service to various organizations on and off the college campus. She was a leader of the campus movement called Students Working for Equal Rights, formed to promote equality for all students, no matter where they were born or when they arrived in America. In her “spare” time, Mili mentored and tutored fellow students at the Kathryn W. Davis Global Education Center.

Inspiration: At Palm Beach State, Mili said she was grateful to have Jeannett Manzanero as her advisor and Bobette Wolesensky as one of her professors. “They have both been instrumental in my accomplishments, from helping me build my applications to helping me grow as a student.” There are other teachers as well who’ve made an indelible impression on Mili. From her high school days Brenda Corey and Nancy Nubar were always eager to help Mili move upward.

Aspiration: “I may become an immigration attorney, aiding families facing the same struggles, or perhaps, a non-profit organizer, making educational resources more accessible to marginalized communities,” Mili said.

Making a Difference: While a student at Palm Beach State College, Mili was Core-leader of Students Working For Equal Rights, a pro-DREAM Act and immigrant rights activist group. She also was editor-in-chief of Sabiduria, the Honors College peer review journal.

Accolades: Mili is the recipient of the Kathryn W. Davis Global Education Scholarship and her SWER civil rights group was awarded the Youth Racial Justice Award by the YWCA of Palm Beach County.

Interesting Fact: She briefly was a member of a women’s roller derby team.
