Biography

Profile: As Jamie Cook ended her final community college semester she had to balance a full academic load with two time-consuming jobs. She worked both as an assistant manager at a local Subway food franchise and tutored students at Mira Costa College as a writing consultant. Jamie feels life has given her a second chance after suffering some hardships. “I am most proud of picking myself up and changing my life for the better,” Jamie said as graduation day approached in the spring of 2012. And on that graduation day, Jamie was near the head of her class, finishing with a 3.8 grade point average and a resume filled with extracurricular and volunteer activities.

Inspiration: Jamie’s inspiration is Dr. Lisa Fast, “a wonderful professor who helped blossom my love for psychology.”  Witnessing Dr. Fast’s knowledge as she taught classes provided a goal for Jamie: “I want to accomplish what she has accomplished and become an inspiration for someone like she is for me.”

Aspiration: Jamie hopes to continue to pursue her passion for psychology and “make a difference in this world.” Working with youth as a counselor is a possibility.

Making a Difference: Jamie is a mainstay at the LA Gay and Lesbian Center. The Center provides a safe haven for gay, lesbian, bisexual, and transgender people. In the past, Jamie also gave freely of her time as a volunteer at the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention.

Accolades: Every semester Jamie was enrolled at Mira Costa, she made the President’s list for top grades. In addition she earned membership in Phi Theta Kappa and won two scholarships, the Fred G. Barnard Memorial Scholarship and the Mort and Agatha Winski Memorial Scholarship.

Interesting Fact: When Jamie was only five years old she was the first girl to sign up for the Glendora Roller Hockey League. She was obviously good at it because she played goalie for the next thirteen years.
