“I had the opportunity to meet the CEO of the Texas Medical Center. We talked about what it takes to be a doctor. He helped me to understand that the field of medicine, if practiced correctly, has everything that I am interested in: saving lives, educating patients about maintaining healthy lifestyles, a love of people, and science.”

Biography

Highlights of Young Scholar Experience: The Foundation gave Jasmine Larry the means to explore different aspects of medical science. She was able to participate in summer courses at Duke University and Brown University. She said was not looking forward to the “formidable task” of the college application process but thanks to the advice and literature provided by the Foundation it was not a dizzying chore at all, and because of it “I learned to become an even better time-manager and planner.”

Profile: Vanderbilt University will be Jasmine’s next stop on her way to a career in medicine. For the Houston-area native her undergraduate career will be another in a series of challenges and adventures that she has met head-on and conquered. A track star (100 and 200 meters and relays) at the prestigious St. John’s School in Houston, she also shines in the classroom. Like many dedicated athletes, Jasmine credits track with teaching her discipline, patience and trust of her teammates that helped her achieve her goals, both in competitive sports and with her studies. In eight years, when Jasmine finally gets to recite the Hippocratic Oath with her medical school class, she’ll know it by heart because she already lives by its tenets of helping the helpless wherever she may encounter them.

Inspiration: Jasmine often finds herself quietly saying the Serenity Prayer: “God grant me the serenity to accept the things I cannot change, the courage to change the things I can and the wisdom to know the difference.” She credits her mother for passing along that simple, wonderful prayer and for also instilling in her at an early age the need to help those who had fallen. Academically, Jasmine’s hero and advisor is Dr. Rube Williams from her junior high school days, who not only helped her “get” math and science, but “also gave me advice on how I should approach life’s challenges.”

Aspiration: It is Jasmine’s hope to someday be a surgeon and save lives.

Making a Difference: In the summer of 2009, Jasmine ventured to Kiana, Alaska (Population 388) as a tutor and to conduct chemistry experiments with high school students in that remote fishing village. “It was an honor to get to know the teenagers of Kiana and be exposed to their lifestyles.”

Accolades: Jasmine was a National Achievement Scholarship Semi-finalist in 2009 and was named the Most Improved Player on her high school’s track and field team in 2008. For three years in a row she also earned the President’s Volunteer Service Award Silver Medal presented by the USA Freedom Corps.

Interesting fact: Costa Rica has over 200 identifiable volcanic formations dating back over 65 million years. Jasmine wanted us to know that on top of just one of them she enjoyed a cup of hot cocoa during a mountain hike a few years ago while there on a community service mission.
