“School is among the more important things in my life and I pride myself in working hard. In my life I have cultivated integrity in both my school work and in my relationships with other people. I am nowhere near perfect, but I take my mistakes, learn from them, and move on.”
Highlights of Young Scholar Experience: The world literally “opened up” for Aubrey Higginson when she was accepted into the Young Scholar program. Though not able to point to one specific summer session, course, lesson or program that she participated in as the best experience, suffice it to say that being a Young Scholar “changed my life.” Throughout high school she said she lived by the words of Jack Kent Cooke: “Think big, work hard, achieve!”
Profile: Aubrey grew up a stone’s throw from the headquarters of the Foundation in Northern Virginia. But just like the other 38 College Scholars from across the nation she’s a special student and a special person and on her way to great things. Look beyond the perfect 4.0 GPA at Stone Bridge High School; look beyond the volunteer work at the local hospital, with her church and with the Girl Scouts; and look beyond her extracurricular school activities with sports and clubs. What you find is a well-rounded teenager, mature beyond her years, embarking on a sure-to-be successful college career. She is the 2010 version of the Renaissance Woman – artist, musician, athlete, scholar, humanitarian.
Inspiration: She loves art and music, spending countless hours “pounding on my piano” and painting and drawing. “I love creating beauty, both visually and through music.”
Aspiration: She’s undecided about her career but said she’ll continue to make her mark volunteering through her church. Aubrey has a wonderful philosophy of life: “I believe in having fun, making friends, and taking every good opportunity life offers.”
Making a Difference: Aubrey has a fan club among the staff at INOVA Loudoun Hospital where she’s been a volunteer for over a year. Using her “people skills” and knowledge of Spanish, she works in the Patient Admission Office and helps to improve the intake process by facilitating interactions between the public and hospital personnel.
Accolades: At the end of her junior year, Aubrey received an Academic Letter at her high school. She’s also an officer of the school’s Model UN and one of her sketches was chosen for the cover of the school’s annual literary magazine.
Interesting fact: With all that she does in her waking hours, it should be no surprise to know that Aubrey is an expert juggler.
