Biography

Highlights of Young Scholar Experience: Being a Young Scholar allowed Marguerite “Maggie” Conners to transfer from her small public high school and attend a top-tier boarding school in Ohio, “a turning point in her life.” She had always been a good student, but admitted that she had never really been challenged.   Maggie has also taken full advantage of summer programs. In 2008, she spent one month in Costa Rica through the Experiment in International Living program, where she did community service work and studied ecology.

Profile: Maggie grew up in a big family in rural Upstate New York, just a few miles from the shores of Lake Ontario. She’s a sports enthusiast, honor roll student, Irish dancer, expert photographer, has a wonderful sense of humor and is a friend to all who know her. A transfer to Western Reserve Academy in Ohio, Maggie was challenged at her new school “sometimes to the point of tears” but she learned how to manage her time and prioritize. She said one of the pivotal turning points in her life was adjusting to boarding school.

Inspiration: Maggie’s older siblings ingrained in her a love of learning at an early age. In addition, her Irish Step Dance teacher, Maureen Mahoney, taught Maggie to have a bright outlook on life “and not sweat the petty things.”

Aspiration: Maggie is still undecided about the path her future will take. Though one thing is for sure, she wants to some day visit family in Europe. “I want to find a career that I love.”

Making a Difference: Maggie was a member of the Reach Community Service Club at Western Reserve Academy, where she was also a mainstay on the women’s soccer team. Out of school Maggie’s volunteered with Crop Walk/Hunger Walk, to raise money for anti-hunger programs.

Accolades: Before transferring to boarding school in Ohio, Maggie was named a New York State Scholar Athlete and was a high honor roll student throughout her high school career, both at public school in New York and prep school in Ohio. In addition, during her junior year at Western Reserve, Maggie was awarded the National Spanish Exam Gold Medal.

Interesting fact: Maggie’s very competitive and loves sports and is the youngest of six children. Maggie says the dinner table at her home in New York is always an adventure. She always eats as much as she can, “a habit after years of every-man-for-himself dinners” with a big family and lots of older brothers.
