Biography

PROFILE: Cheryl-Lynn May brings a sense of mission to uncovering history, especially when it comes to the world of colonial American women. “I have consistently encountered silenced voices from the past; women who labored and loved, crafted and created. Early American women were a dominant force, from the boycotting of tea to the fashioning of carefully crafted portrait miniatures.” Objects from the past hold a special fascination for Cheryl-Lynn, for their ability to reveal a more tactile understanding of our cultural roots. “Something as simple as a tattered glove or a handwritten cookbook can reveal fascinating details about the past.”
Cheryl-Lynn may not have always known what she wanted to do, but school itself was her dream—if elusive at times. Challenged by asthma, and often struggling to catch up after absences, Cheryl-Lynn began creating her own future in high school by running four miles a day. “Not only did my health improve, but I became the student I always wanted to be.” Her perseverance continues to reward her today. Knowing the power of education to open doors and change lives, she looks forward to teaching and inspiring new voices as she continues to give voice to history.
INSPIRATION: When she first entered community college, Cheryl-Lynn had not decided on a career path. It was hearing her first art history lecture that changed everything. “From that moment, I knew that teaching was destined to be in my future.”
ASPIRATION: Cheryl-Lynn plans to become a professor and museum curator.
MAKING A DIFFERENCE: Cheryl-Lynn has been a team captain and fundraiser for both Cure Autism Now and the National Multiple Sclerosis Society. She also volunteers as a tutor for English as a Second Language.
ACCOLADES: Winner of the Forester Writing Scholarship and the Best of the Best Symposium Presentation Award at Lake Forest College, Cheryl-Lynn also received the Alex F. Mitchell Senior Prize in Art History, as well as the Lois F. McNeil Fellowship from the University of Delaware.
