Biography

PROFILE: When Jolyn Zwemer was only in 2nd grade, she fixed fences, hauled water, and helped her mother and older sister feed the horses and sheep. Then again, she comes from a strong family. Her mother survived breast cancer and her father a stroke, both proving to be an inspiration to Jolyn.
Jolyn’s leadership roles began in middle school and continued through high school—where she was active in sports and music, in addition to holding positions in the Future Business Leaders of America and the student council. She has always dreamed of attending law school, and her experience working as the Juvenile Diversion Coordinator for her county has solidified her interest in family law. As someone who has always had a gift for leadership, Jolyn looks forward to a career in which she can impact the lives of adolescents in a positive way.
INSPIRATION: Jolyn’s desire to become a juvenile court judge has been inspired by flaws in the system. “The juvenile justice system is in need of great transformation. Working with first-time offenders has helped me understand that juveniles make mistakes and don’t always need severe punishment, but sometimes a helping hand to get them back on track.”
ASPIRATION: Jolyn plans to be a family law attorney, and ultimately a juvenile court judge.
MAKING A DIFFERENCE: As Albany County Juvenile Diversion Coordinator, Jolyn conducts intake interviews and has learned to look for success in even the small changes. “You have to make the juvenile feel as if it is the most important feat they have accomplished.”
ACCOLADES: Jolyn graduated magna cum laude, was a Top 20 Graduate of Arts and Sciences, and the Top Criminal Justice Student for 2008.
INTERESTING FACT: Jolyn loves to sing arias from operas and also plays the saxophone.
