PROFILE: Matylda Czarnecka has always had a passion for nonfiction. She discovered her passion for truth when she became editor-in-chief of her high school newspaper. She became fascinated by stories told during interviews and is an avid reporter and researcher of news tips.
As part of the Interactive Media division at The Bakersfield Californian newspaper, Matylda has been a trailblazer helping to attract the attention of media companies in the US and Europe with her innovative and creative ideas. “Within the newspaper industry, I have seen leaders use innovation to help companies grow through times of great change. Journalism is fundamentally significant to our culture, and I want to help it thrive through its inevitable changes.”
INSPIRATION: A Jack Kent Cooke Scholar since 2002, Matylda enjoys meeting and interacting with fellow Scholars as it helps “fuel my motivation to continue pursuing my goals.”
ASPIRATION: Matylda intends to pursue a career in media management and eventually become an entrepreneur.
MAKING A DIFFERENCE: Matylda was selected to plan and oversee a volunteer program of nearly 400 international students for SIGGRAPH, an annual computer graphics conference that attracts tens of thousands of people from around the world.
ACCOLADES: Matylda won an award for Best Interactive Campaign from the Inland Press Association and was on the Newshouse/Arts & Science Dean’s List for four consecutive years. She was the recipient of the Hero Award for Innovation from The Bakersfield Californian newspaper.
INTERESTING FACT: Matylda once volunteered as a public radio DJ.
