"I feel that my involvement in the campus and local community demonstrates my desire and willingness to apply what I learn academically to the real world as an 'agent of change.'"
The complex relationship between communications media and society interests Nasha Taylor. She intends to study media and use her production skills, especially in audio, to create communications pieces for nonprofit organizations. She believes in the power of art, communications, and education to help communities.
Nasha performs extensive community service, aligning with grassroots organizations that promote democracy and government accountability. "I intend to use my experience with cultural awareness, racial justice, community activism, and fair education opportunities throughout my life." During school, she held jobs in programs that provide youth counseling and education. "We need an education system that gives our next generation skills and a will to succeed, regardless of what class society places them in." In 2005, she received the Citizen of the Year award from the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP), recognizing her projects including lobbying, anti-racism training, voter drives, drug law reform, and organizing her local Juneteenth celebration which commemorates the end of slavery. She also received academic and communication arts awards while at community college. Lack of funds forced Nasha to interrupt her schooling after she graduated from Broome, but this scholarship will allow her to resume her education.
Everywhere, Nasha finds meaning. She recently attended a show of graffiti art in lower Manhattan. "This art can open minds with beauty and a message of hope, remembrance, or a call to action. I enjoy and recognize street art as a forum for social statements. I see it used for healing, for protest, for attention, and for pride."
